Strait of Hormuz Disruption and the New Energy Security Reality

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive energy corridors, and instability around it has become a defining issue for 2026 energy security. The International Energy Agency’s May 2026 public Oil Market Report stated that global oil supply had fallen sharply, with total losses since February reaching 12.8 million barrels per day. Under an assumption that flows gradually resume from June, the IEA still projected average 2026 global oil supply to decline by 3.9 million barrels per day.

For businesses in Africa, this is not a distant geopolitical issue. When energy flows are disrupted in the Gulf, the effect travels through international product pricing, shipping availability, insurance premiums and currency pressure. Import-dependent markets face a double burden: higher energy prices and higher logistics costs. This can affect petroleum products, construction materials, food commodities, mining inputs and even basic consumer goods.

The key business risk is not only price. It is the uncertainty of arrival dates, demurrage exposure, storage availability and the possibility that a shipment becomes commercially unattractive while still in transit. Traders and logistics companies must therefore manage supply chains with scenario planning. A deal should be tested against at least three assumptions: normal delivery, delayed delivery and severe disruption.

Energy security in 2026 should be viewed as a board-level issue. Companies with fuel-dependent operations must understand their minimum inventory levels, supplier alternatives, storage agreements and emergency procurement procedures. Trade finance teams must also review whether letters of credit, guarantees and payment terms still match actual shipping risk.

TRINEX can use this environment to strengthen its value proposition: helping clients secure supply, structure documentation, coordinate logistics and reduce operational exposure. In an unstable energy market, the most trusted service provider will be the one that combines market intelligence with disciplined execution.
